One of the Two Finest-Known 1917 DDO Lincoln Cents
A Stunning PCGS MS-67 RD (Pop: 2/0) for this Popular and Eagerly Sought Mint Error
|
| Description: |
This is a DDO error that has grown tremendously in popularity among Lincoln Cent enthusiasts in recent years. Writing in the 2009 book Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins, Fifth Edition, Volume I, Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton state of the 1917 FS-101 Doubled Die Obverse:
This variety has finally become arguably the most sought after of the early Lincoln cent varieties. Grades as low as G-4 are easily sold, and higher grade examples may command prices higher than those listed here.
David W. Lange, in his book The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents (1996), echoes these sentiments when he states:
A distinct, doubled-die obverse is known for [the 1917] and has become extremely popular with specialists. Uncirculated examples remain quite rare.
The vivid, bright, rose-red Superb Gem that we offer here is a prime condition rarity that is tied for finest-known honors among 1917 DDO Cents with one other MS-67 RD listed at PCGS. A beautiful coin irrespective of its desirability as a Mint error, both sides exhibit a softly frosted texture to fully intact and vibrant mint luster. A sharp strike and smooth, virtually pristine surfaces are also praiseworthy attributes and contribute to the accuracy of the Superb Gem grade. One of the most important Lincoln Cents we have ever offered, and a coin that has the potential to shatter all previous prices realized records for the series.
The pick-up-points for this variety are the letters in the word TRUST and the digits in the date 1917. All of these features readily reveal pronounced doubling when examined with the aid of a loupe.
PCGS Population: just 2; with none finer.
PCGS# 92498.
